WHAT IS IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY? Ignatian
Spirituality is a spirituality for everyday life. It insists that God
is present in our world and active in our lives. It is a pathway to
deeper prayer, good decisions guided by keen discernment, and an active
life of service to others. With an emphasis on prayer, group and
individual spiritual direction, the exercises are designed for those
feeling a personal desire for a deeper relationship with Jesus and
commitment to their own spiritual journey.
WHAT ARE THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES? The Spiritual Exercises
grew out of Ignatius Loyola’s personal experience as a man seeking to grow in
union with God and to discern God’s will. He kept a journal as he gained
spiritual insight and deepened his spiritual experience. He added to these
notes as he directed other people and discovered what “worked.” Eventually
Ignatius gathered these prayers, meditations, reflections, and directions into
a carefully designed framework of a retreat, which he called “spiritual
exercises.”
THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES OF ST. IGNATIUS . . . For Our Time
The nuanced dynamic of this contemplative retreat is integrating the Spiritual
Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola with the inspiration of Jesuit priest-scientist Pierre
Teilhard de Chadin. Teilhard’s evolutionary perspectives invite a contemporary focus on our cooperation
with God’s intention and desire for our lives and for the world in these modern
times. The journey of these weeks will interweave the traditional
Exercises and present-day insights of creation’s evolving story and the universal Body of
Christ.
